Dave's PhotoJournal for September 25th, 2005, Part 4 of 4

Part 3 Up Next

Summary

Part 4, Hiking Back Down, and the Drive Home

After sitting by the lake for awhile, we started doing the math. Based on what time it was, how long it would take us to hike back out, how long it would take to drive back to the highway, and how long it would take to drive home, we decided that in order to get back at a reasonable time, we would need to leave about an hour ago. Since we obviously didn't, that meant we'd be getting home around 11. Which is fine for me, but that's a bit late for Julie, since she has to work at 7:15 am. Oh well.

That didn't prevent me from stopping a few times to take more pictures. As usual, Julie didn't even bother stopping. You can see her not stopping in this picture.

I could sit here taking pictures of leaves changing colors all day.

All week, even.

Looking back up the trail.

This picture can be seen in Rate Dave's Photos.

Same picture, horizontally. In the end, I decided I liked the other one better.

Looking up at yellow trees in the late afternoon sun. Is there anything more beautiful?

So, we started driving home. This is a view of Black Tusk from the highway.

Not quite Black Tusk. Black Tusk would be to the left.

Yeah, right there. It's tough, getting these pictures, because you only get to see it for a fraction of a second at a time, through the trees.

I love this view. You can see it over the little mini pass between Squamish and Whistler.

I can never seem to get a good picture of it though. This time I did better than most times...

Going through a little blasted out canyon. This part of the drive used to be a little, tiny, two lane road, with no shoulders, and tons of pits in the asphalt. But, it was greatly improved as part of the larger project of improving Highway 99 between Vancouver and Whistler for the 2010 Olympics.

More view along Highway 99, the Sea To Sky Highway.

Stawamus Chief, in Squamish, about midway between Whistler and Vancouver. It's always jaw-dropping, everytime I see it. Obviously, it doesn't carry through to pictures, just because it's so darn BIG.

The sense of pure, ego blasting scale just doesn't come through in an image that's 560 by 420 pixels.

And, as long as I'm on the subject of ego-blasting scale, I might as well mention that this is the 15,000th picture in the Photojournal. Can you believe that? You've looked at 15,000 pictures of this stuff. And I've written 15,000 captions. I'm not sure which is worse.

Sunset over Howe Sound, between Squamish and Vancouver.

All of Highway 99 is such an incredibly beautiful drive. It's quite a shame that none of the people reading the journal (with a couple exceptions, like you, Nina) have ever come with me to see it for themselves.

Not like that's a shameless plug for having you come visit, or anything.
